23 Student Projects Receive Funding in Anniversary Year
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar announced the 80,000 euro »23:ideas fund« this spring to promote student projects and ideas. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first major Bauhaus Exhibition in 1923. A total of 95 teams applied and 23 were selected by the jury at the beginning of June. The projects will be exhibited in the coming months and will be highlighted at the summaery2023 in July and the Bauhaus Weeks in August.
»The scope of the projects submitted was very broad; We saw projects from every faculty, as well as numerous interdisciplinary projects. Our eight-member jury did not find the selection«, said Anniversary coordinator Thomas Apel, describing the selection process, which involved representatives from all four faculties. »The fact that exactly 23 projects ended up being selected for funding, fitting with the Anniversary theme of »23:ideas«, was entirely coincidental. Unfortunately, the fund is not enough to support all of the projects submitted, which we very much regret.«
Students Creating Spaces
Produktdesign (Product Design) and Architecture and Urbanism students will be presenting their projects at Belvederer Allee 66, a residential building that evolved into a collaborative space to live, learn and work away from seminar rooms during the pandemic. »Community Kitchen« works towards bringing university members together and establishing an informal setting for this purpose through their pop-up community kitchen on campus. »PLUSMINUSNULL – architektur im prozess« is a pavilion that functions as a convertible social space built solely out of materials collected from local recycling processes.
Artistic Examination of Socio-Political Issues
»Protokoll M« is a project where Urbanistik (Urbanism) and Media Art and Design students address the phenomenon of the »Weimarer Montagsspaziergänge« through artistic and scientific perspectives. Hannes Naumann develop a large-scale hidden object picture in his »Zorn des Wimmels«, which pointedly highlights social and political hot button issues. Hala Masri’s »The UnbearAble-Bodiedness, a sister’s storytelling dance« artistic research project on ableism is a space consuming installation and performative dance between the artist and her deaf sister.
The Historical Bauhaus During the Anniversary
Referring to the large poster displayed on the Main Building during the first major Bauhaus Exhibition in 1923, which was designed exclusively based on typography, the Department of Typography is presenting the »204 Type-Gazette«. The font includes typefaces designed by students to mark the Anniversary. The »baustelle:23« project examines the status of women at the historic Bauhaus in the crafts of weaving and pottery in comparison with today’s textile and ceramic crafts in Thuringia. Students from the Faculties of Civil Engineering and Art and Design use installation and interactive games to create a space for constructive debate in this project.
Background:
A century has passed since the State Bauhaus presented its work to the public for the first time in a major exhibition. The »Bauhaus-Ausstellung« (Bauhaus Exhibition), whose reputation reached far beyond Weimar, was held from 15 August to 30 September 1923 and was a magnet for countless artists, intellectuals and art aficionados of the time. The exhibition solidified the international reputation of the art school.
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is seizing the opportunity of this anniversary to share its contemporary works and subjects with the public. Students and instructors invite you to exhibitions and events under the title of »23:ideas« from April to November 2023. These events and exhibitions centre around collaborations with partners of the university.
