Artistic assistant garners distinction in Marianne Brandt Competition
Nina Röder, Artistic Assistant in the Photo Studios in the Faculty of Media, experienced success with her work "Determinism is the friend not the foe" in the fifth International Marianne Brandt Competition at the Museum of Industry Chemnitz. She received distinction for her photo series, which will be included in the exhibit that is part of the competition in Tokyo, Oslo, Moscow, Berlin, Leipzig, as well as other locations.
In "Determinism is the friend not the foe", Nina Röder grapples with Oskar Schlemmer's theater-studies body-space design. Based on the assumption that free will originates through external influences and one's own biography, she shows in her photographs in which way certain situations and determining factors inform what one thinks and how one communicates and behaves.
Röder produced different stage pictures in cubic spaces. Inside, a series of protagonists perform with the stipulation of incorporating personal factors, such as origin, gender, environment and destiny. "With their elaborate stagings, they create individual, completely surreal poetic worlds," wrote Saskia Diez, one of the jury members.
This is the fifth time the Marianne Brandt Competition has been hosted in Chemnitz. A total of 70 works were nominated in three categories. In the field of "Photography", Nine Röder received a distinction and will be included in the traveling exhibit that is part of the competition in Tokyo, Oslo, Moscow, Berlin, Leipzig,a saw ell as other locations. The competition was brought to life by Villa Arte e.V., in order to honor the life and work of the Bauhaus member Marianne Brandt.
