Finale of the 2012 »Zero Award for Green Architecture« at Gaswerk in Weimar 20 November, 2012
The 2012 Zero Award for Green Architecture, offered jointly by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, was awarded simultaneously for the first time to three countries. The results of the innovation competition were announced at an event at the Weimar project- and design studio Gaswerk on Friday, 7 December, 2012.
The participants could submit entries in the categories of Architecture, Interior/Product Design and Urban Planning/Landscaping. Nine winners emerged from three national preliminary rounds. Those winners began working together in mixed international teams in August, 2012, further developing the concepts for Green Architecture. The event presented the results of the international collaboration.
The event at Gaswerk displayed a multitude of solutions for questions of our time. One could see novel building materials made from renewable materials, a technological solution for the reuse of condensation water from air-conditioning units and concepts for the social and ecological development of urban areas. An international prize jury judged and evaluated the entries at the event.
The competition, which was organized by the »icehubs« innovation network, was designed to foster and promote young innovators from Egypt, Ethiopia and Weimar. The goal was to generate alternative and sustainable solutions for current challenges in urban development in Africa. In July of 2011, Jörn Schultz, on behalf of GIZ, began building a new network hub for Germany: »icebauhaus«. Since then, architects and designers of the three “hubs” have been cooperating in multiple projects, one of them being the 2012 Zero Award for Green Architecture.
»ice« stands for »Innovation, Collaboration, Entrepreneurship«. The three »tech-Hubs« »icecairo« (Egypt), »iceaddis« (Ethiopia) and »icebauhaus« at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar provide intersections on location for the local developer communities.
