Award-Winning Final Projects Honoured at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism

On 22 November 2024, this year’s winners of the traditional graduation exhibition at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism were recognised as part of the graduation ceremony. Three main prizes, two special prizes and ten commendations were presented for outstanding ideas and solutions addressing contemporary architectural, urban development and social challenges. These encompass topics such as urban-rural dynamics, the repurposing and conversion of buildings, structural changes, opportunities for participation and the role of artificial intelligence.

The main prizes were presented to:

  • Julian Franz Feld for his bachelor’s thesis in architecture, »Scavi di Pompeii«. He designed a new visitor centre for the Roman excavation site, providing a serene space for visitors to prepare and take a break upon arrival. The design takes into account the 300-year-old architectural context while addressing the challenges posed by the overloaded and unstructured local infrastructure.

  • The collaborative project undertaken by Lando Daut, Denise Dilje, Felix Schmidt and Anna Wagner as part of their Master of Architecture program is entitled »Gemeinschaffende Infrastrukturen im ländlichen Raum - Eine vernetzende Dorfwerkstatt in Gaberndorf«. The »Thesiskollektiv« launched a public initiative in the village aimed at fostering spaces of opportunity through local and community collaboration, as well as creating site-specific concepts for community.

  • Lester Malte Pott’s bachelor’s thesis in urban studies focuses on »Strukturwandel des Eigentums in der ostdeutschen Landwirtschaft - Am Beispiel der Agrargenossenschaft in Thüringen«. It examined the decline of East German agricultural cooperatives in Thuringia and their association with land grabbing, highlighting how financially robust entities acquire farms and drive the capitalisation of land.

The external jury made its selection from a pool of 29 final projects submitted by the faculty’s professors. Dr. Marta Doehler Behzadi says: »The diversity of ideas and the creative approaches to the various design challenges are remarkable and quite refreshing. We were also impressed by the high quality of the graphics and modelling. I would like to take a moment to expressly commend the professors who supervised these outstanding projects. What could be better for a university than to be able to say that the overall quality of work is remarkably high.«

Jury members in 2024 were Jörg Baum, Managing Director Junk & Reich, Weimar & Member of the Board of the Thuringian Chamber of Architects; Dr. Marta Doehler-Behzadi, Urban Planner, DASL and former Managing Director of IBA Thuringia; Alexej Kolyschkow, ZILA Architek.innen, Leipzig.

The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism recognizes outstanding final projects by budding architects and urban planners through awards sponsored by the Thuringian Chamber of Architects, which provides prize money of 500 euros. Additionally, trade publications such as Bauwelt, ARCH+, DETAIL, wa aktuell and Die Planerin contribute several free annual subscriptions as part of the honour.

The exhibition will be showcased in the Main Building of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar until 13 December 2024.
