International »BACKUP & BEYOND« student short film festival of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar celebrates twentieth anniversary
Founded in 1999 by students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar as the »backup_festival«, the international short film festival is celebrating its twentieth anniversary in 2019 with »BACKUP & BEYOND«. From 27 November to 1 December 2019, an extensive programme comprising panel discussions, special screenings and exhibitions will be offered in addition to innovative and award-winning film contributions.
Two decades after its founding, »BACKUP & BEYOND« looks to the future. The focus is on 90 innovative short films by students and graduates of art and design courses from all over the world, who use creative means to address the diverse challenges of the future.
Special events including panel discussions consider current approaches of the film industry to the subjects of sustainability and fairness in the film business. The future of Thuringia as a film location as well as social change and the associated consequences and opportunities resulting from the fusion of humans and technology are further key topics featuring on the festival programme.
At 3 pm on Friday, 29 November 2019, the short film festival »BACKUP & BEYOND« will honour the German-Israeli co-production entitled »Bauhaus Remains« with a special screening at the Lichthaus-Kino in Weimar. Students from Tel Aviv University and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar worked in mixed teams to produce four short documentaries dealing with the urban utopias of the 1920s and the avant-garde ideas of the Bauhaus, and examine their relevance in the present day.
The BACKUP & BEYOND Film and Media Art Festival is a project of the Professorship for Media Events of the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. It is organised by students on an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty basis.
