Special Recognition: Weimar Professor named founding member of the IEEE VGTC Virtual Reality Academy
The IEEE VGTC Virtual Reality Academy was founded this year during the »IEEE VR 2022« conference with the goal of bringing international scientists from the virtual and augmented reality industry and research field together under one roof. Members of the Academy are recognised for their outstanding achievements and contributions in these fields. Prof. Dr. Bernd Fröhlich, Professor of Virtual Reality Systems in the Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, was introduced as an inaugural member on 14 March 2022.
Twelve inaugural members were elected to the Academy alongside previous IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee VR Lifetime Achievement Award and VR Technical Achievement Award recipients. Prof. Dr. Bernd Fröhlich is, with Prof. Gudrun Klinker from the Technical University of Munich, one of just two German members appointed to the Academy.
Prof. Fröhlich has held the Professorship of Virtual Reality Systems in the Department of Computer Science of Media at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar since 2001. His research group »Virtual Reality and Visualization Research« carries out research on the fundamentals and applications of multi-user virtual reality and 3D user interfaces, visualisation and rendering algorithms for large data sets, and information visualisation.
Prof. Fröhlich has been actively involved in the international virtual reality community for many years: He was a founding member of the IEEE Symposiums on 3D User Interfaces in 2005, was recognised with the IEEE VGTC Technical Achievement Award in 2008 for his work in the field of virtual reality and 3D user interfaces, and acted as Chair of the IEEE VR Steering Committee from 2014 to 2018. He has also worked at numerous internationally renowned universities. His academic posts include Stanford University in California, the University of Waterloo in Canada and the Universidad Central de Venezuela.
About the »IEEE VR«:
The IEEE VR Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces is the most important international conference in the field of virtual reality. It has provided an annual interdisciplinary platform for experts from computer science, psychology, engineering and human-computer interaction since 1993. Originally set to take place in Christchurch, New Zealand, the IEEE VR is being held online for the third year in a row from 12 to 16 March 2022. In addition to classic 2D video conference systems, presenters are also given the experimental option to present in virtual reality, something that Weimar researchers have already been using.
