Since 1 March 2025, Prof. Schmutz has been Professor of Building Morphology at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
Am Mittwoch, den 14. Mai 2025, lädt die Fakultät Architektur und Urbanistik der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar zum Antrittsvortrag der Inhaber*innen der Vertretungsprofessur Entwerfen und Raumgestaltung ein. On Wednesday, 7 May 2025, the Senate confirmed the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s new Vice Presidents. Prof. Dr. Guido Morgenthal will hold the office of Vice President for Projects and Research for the next three years. During their session, Senate members voted strongly in favour of President Prof. Peter Benz’s proposal. Prof. Dr. Timon Rabczuk, the previous Vice President, resigned from the position due to personal reasons. During the session, the Senate bid farewell to Prof. Rabczuk and President Prof. Peter Benz thanked him for his commitment over the past two years. With the appointment of Prof. Morgenthal, the Presidential Board is again complete.
The Spanish architect duo Pablo Garrido Arnaiz and Carla Ferrando Costansa, founders of PARABASE, will be leading the Professorship of Architectural Space and Design in the 2025 summer semester at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. 1999 wurde der Verein der Freunde des Bauingenieur- und Baustoffingenieurwesens (vfbb) an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar gegründet. On 1 September 2024, Patrick Staubach was appointed University Professor of Geotechnics at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Over the course of his academic career, he has specialised in numerical methods and applications, specifically in the field of offshore wind turbines. To celebrate his appointment, Prof. Staubach is inviting all interested parties to his public inaugural lecture on 19 February, 2025 at 4:30 pm in Lecture Hall A at Marienstraße 13. The topic of the lecture is »Beiträge der Geotechnik im Hinblick auf die Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts« (contributions of geotechnics to 21st century challenges).
Natural hazards and severe weather events put buildings under great stress. Junior Professor Anastasia Athanasiou is investigating how to plan and build tall, slender structures safely and in a resource-efficient manner. Since July 2023, she has held the newly established chair of Natural Hazards and Structural Resilience at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. A native of Greece, she previously worked at the University of Catania (Italy) and Concordia University in Montreal (Canada). In her inaugural lecture, she will report on the challenges of the past year and provide an insight into current research achievements.

From October 2022 until September 2024, PD Dr Sandra Huning served as Deputy Professor of Urban Planning at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. In October 2024, she will return to the Technical University of Dortmund to resume her position at the Faculty of Spatial Planning within the Department of Urban and Regional Sociology. Ihre Mentorin ist Jun.-Prof. Dr. Daniela Zupan (European Cities and Urban Heritage).
In 2012, Prof. Dr. Barbara Schönig was appointed head of the Department of Urban Planning. She held this position until 2021, when she was appointed State Secretary for the Thüringer Ministerium für Infrastruktur und Landwirtschaft, a position she held for over two years. In July 2024, she will be returning to the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism and preparing to teach in the 2024/2025 winter semester.
How will artificial intelligence change our society? Do algorithms influence our politics? Can digital technologies make trusting more difficult? These are questions being investigated by Junior Professor Dr. Maurice Jakesch, newly appointed computer science professor in the Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His professorship for Computational Social Science uses computer systems to gain insights into social issues. Jakesch and his team analyse large volumes of data utilising machine learning methods, conduct online experiments and test AI prototypes of their own design. Their aim is to attain a better understanding of the opportunities and risks presented by algorithms and AI systems. In the following interview, Maurice Jakesch answers the most important questions about the newly created professorship and the Computational Social Science field of research.
Dr. Luise Nerlich, kommissarische Leiterin der Professur Bauformenlehre an der Fakultät Architektur und Urbanistik der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, vertritt Deutschland in der Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA). Für die Legislaturperiode 2023 bis 2026 wurde sie neben Dr. Tillman Prinz, Geschäftsführer der Bundesarchitektenkammer, für die Arbeitsgruppe »Architecture and Children« nominiert und übernimmt damit als festes Mitglied das Amt von Dr. Hannes Hubrich, der die Arbeitsgruppe viele Jahre als Gast begleitet hat.
Prof. Dr. Eva Hornecker, Professor of Human-Computer Interaction in the Computer Science of Media Department at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, has been named a »Distinguished Member« of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). She was recognised on 17 January 2024 for her significant contributions to the field of tangible, embedded and embodied interactions (TEI). This title recognises Prof. Hornecker’s commitment to the development of the ACM TEI Conference and the wider community.
