Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Council Elects New Vice-Chairperson
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Council, newly constituted in November 2019, elected Franciska Zólyom as Vice-Chair on 29. June 2020.
The Chair of the University Council, Dr Rainer Ambrosy, is looking forward to continuing the close cooperation with Franciska Zólyom, who was also a member of the previous University Council:
»I'm very pleased that Ms. Zólyom is stepping up as future deputy. I value her opinions, and we have a history of excellent cooperation. In addition, she has been actively involved in developing the Faculty of Art and Design – this experience will be useful for the upcoming duties of the University Council«.
Franciska Zólyom has been Director of the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig (Leipzig Gallery of Contemporary Art) since 2012 and has previously been a member of the University Council. She has initiated numerous site and context-specific exhibitions and research. In 2019, she was curator of the German Pavilion at the 38th Venice Biennale; the ANKERSENTRUM project (surviving in the ruinous ruin). Her Curatorial Projects »Stadt ohne Zentrum« (city without a centre) and »Stalking Utopia« originate from her interest in spatialising ideologies. Her interest in interactions of (cultural) political and artistic approaches is reflected in the exhibitions and publications »Agents and Provocateurs«, »Lajos Kassák. Botschafter der Avantgarde« (Lajos Kassák. Ambassadors of the avant-garde) and »Andreas Fogarasi:Vasarely, Go Home!«. She has worked with LITTLE WARSAW, Dainius Liskevicius, Céline Condorelli, Urs Lehni, John Smith and myvillages.org (among others) at the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig. As a member of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Council, Franciska Zólyom is aiming to incorporate her experience from her curatorial, cultural and political work into the structures of artistic education.
The University Council consists of five distinguished individuals from the fields of science, business and society, along with one representative from the Ministry of Science and two members of the University. University Council members serve a four-year term and the Council assumes advisory and governing functions, much like directorial boards in commercial enterprises. Essential internal university and strategic decisions cannot be made without University Council approval. The University Council also issues statements on target and performance agreements with the Free State of Thuringia. They are also involved in the internal allocation of funds and decisions regarding the university's annual accounts.
