Starting on 1 July 2024, Professor Dr. Barbara Schönig to Resume Leadership of the Department of Urban Planning
In 2012, Prof. Dr. Barbara Schönig was appointed head of the Department of Urban Planning. She held this position until 2021, when she was appointed State Secretary for the Thüringer Ministerium für Infrastruktur und Landwirtschaft, a position she held for over two years. In July 2024, she will be returning to the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism and preparing to teach in the 2024/2025 winter semester.
She will also be involved with two research projects with the German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded research training group »Gewohnter Wandel. Gesellschaftliche Transformation und räumliche Materialisierung des Wohnens«, where she will be researching the current housing supply together with colleagues from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Goethe University Frankfurt. Prof. Dr. Schönig will be the spokesperson for the DFG research training group. An additional research project, also funded by the DFG, will see Prof. Dr. Schönig working on the topic of »Wohnen im Denkmal. Erhaltung und Gestaltung von denkmalgeschützten baulichen Realisierungen des 20. Jahrhunderts«.
»Prof. Dr. Schönig’s outstanding professional experience will play a pivotal role in her teaching and research, as well as in shaping and defining the Urban Studies degree programmes in the Faculty and in establishing the »Gewohnter Wandel« research training group. We are delighted that Prof. Dr Schönig will be returning to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in July to take on these important tasks for the faculty and university,« says Prof. Dr. Sigrun Langner, Head of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism.
»In addition to her previous professional and academic expertise, Prof. Dr. Schönig will be bringing her valuable experience from her time as State Secretary at the Thüringer Ministerium für Infrastruktur und Landwirtschaft with her to our Faculty. We are extremely excited about this valuable addition to our faculty, especially in regards to imparting knowledge of urban development and spatial planning in the State of Thuringia. This will allow us to increase our contribution to the recruitment of skilled workers in municipal planning and state administration«, continued Prof. Dr. Langner.
During her term of office at TMIL, Prof. Dr. Schönig's work at the Department was put on hold. She was initially replaced by Dr. Lisa Vollmer for one semester, and later by Deputy Professor Dr. Sandra Huning for the remaining period.
