Art and encounters in the Weimar Atrium: skill-share workshops and exhibition

From 4 to 11 February, Weimar's »Atrium« is attracting visitors with a special experience: students from the »Art and Social Terrain« class at the Faculty of Art and Design are designing two shops in the shopping centre. They are putting on an exhibition and offering daily »skill-share workshops« where participants can learn new things and socialise. The vernissage, a performative tour, begins on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, at 5 pm. The meeting point is the red carpet in front of the main entrance.

The Atrium, which describes itself as the »Centre of Life«, is well-known in Weimar. But how well do we know the people who come and go there? What does their everyday life look like? What moves them? What are they missing? And how can students and Weimar residents move closer together? These are the questions the budding artists addressed. Their conclusion: many would like a place to meet – a place where you can get active and learn something.

This gave rise to the idea of the »Skill Share Shop«: »The centre management was incredibly supportive,« reports Nicola Lukassek, one of the project participants. »We were given a shop for the workshops on the second basement floor, where we are present almost around the clock. We have another room on the ground floor for our exhibition. The cooperation with the shop owners is great – they are happy about our project and help wherever they can.«

During their research, the students spoke to visitors and shop owners and met with great interest. For example, a fast food chain serves cookies at the opening, while a drugstore and a grocery shop support the workshops with fresh fruit and other treats. The courses, which take place once or twice a day, are varied: dance, sewing, origami and even hand spinning with raw wool from a regional shepherdess are on the programme. All programmes are free of charge. Registration is possible by telephone on 01520 / 650 04 09 or by e-mail to skill-share-shop[at]gestaltung.uni-weimar.de.

A highlight is the opening on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, at 5 pm. The performative tour starts on the red carpet in front of the main entrance and includes a pop performance. The artistically staged tour also opens up the otherwise closed terrace. There, guests can look forward to a performance that explores the National Socialist past of Jorge-Semprún-Platz.
