Students of the Faculty of Art and Design present works in Chemnitz

Under the title "DU KANNST DAS TRAGEN: Kleider - Codes - Botschaften" (You Can Wear That: Clothes - Codes - Messages), the predominantly international students of the Master's programme " Public Art and New Artistic Strategies" are dealing with current social issues in a cooperation with the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. The results will be presented both in the museum's facilities and in public space from 28 to 30 January 2022.

Based on the large textile and arts and crafts collection of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, young artists from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are currently exploring current conflicts, paradoxes and contradictions of a complex society. How can we make our bodies and our clothes the bearers of images, thoughts, visions and desires? How do we bring ourselves into our environment? How do we become visible as individuals in a community - in public space?

In different artistic forms and media, analogue and/or digital, they develop performative or participatory actions, research, interventions and installations in the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and in the urban space to explore the interplay of body and clothing as a carrier, medium and projection surface for current political movements and social events. The diverse political, social and cultural backgrounds that the international artists bring with them through their individual biographies always open up new ways of seeing and acting here.

The results of these artistic investigations and researches will be presented from Friday, 28 January to Sunday, 30 January in the Säulensaal of the Kunstsammlungen and in public space.

In addition, a discussion with the participating students and the public will take place on the opening day. It will be moderated by the curator of the Chemnitz Art Collections, Dr Sabine Maria Schmidt.

About the degree programme:
In the twenty years of its existence, the English-language MFA degree programme »Kunst im öffentlichen Raum und neue künstlerische Strategien / Public Art and New Artistic Strategies« has made a strong mark. The complex history of the city of Weimar and the region in particular is repeatedly addressed artistically in a way that is both theoretically reflective and practical. Keywords are the so-called Weimar Classicism, the State Bauhaus, the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora memorials, the GDR as well as the period of reunification and post-reunification. The numerous collaborations with art and cultural institutions as well as with universities in Germany and abroad build on the degree programme's fundamental research interest in questioning public spaces for the historical, political, social and cultural themes that are effective in them, reacting to them in artistic interventions and formulating new artistic strategies individually and in groups.
