Award for a media art and design student at the 17th FullDome Festival Jena
Maximiliane Nirschl has been conferred the »JANUS Award« for the best film in the »Art and Experiment« category at the 17th FullDome Festival Jena. She impressed the jury with her 360-degree animated film about a legend of the Cou people, who dwell in the highlands of Taiwan.
The award-winning film is called »Cou 175586 Little Warrior« and was made under extraordinary circumstances in cooperation with international artists and cultural contributors. Maximiliane Nirschl’s production »Seeds« from the immersive music theatre »Cirque du Bauhaus« already earned her an award back in 2019, along with an invitation to a FullDome Festival in Taiwan. It was there that she met the cultural mediator Corbett Wall, who had the idea of transferring legends that the »Cou« indigenous people share through storytelling to the FullDome medium.
This is how the media art and design student came to join the project. She animated the illustrations by the indigenous artist Tanivu Nota in a 360-degree format, while Austrian musician David Era contributed the soundtrack. The film was then presented at the FullDome Festival in Jena during a live performance: with their dances and songs, the Taiwanese indigenous artists who travelled to Jena on the initiative of Corbett Wall transformed Maximiliane Nirschl’s FullDome animation into an extraordinary experience.
This performance also impressed the jury; which said in its statement: »The myths and legends of the Cou people are brought to life in this beautifully animated story that preserves the indigenous culture and shares their joy, spirit and traditions through the power of the FullDome medium.«
Two other film submissions by students from the Professorship for Immersive Media received an honourable mention at the FullDome Festival: »Asfixia« by Briam Rolon and »Opir*with ShuShu« by Xenia Günther.
Maximiliane Nirschl is currently finishing off her Master’s degree in media art and design, supervised by Honorary Professor Micky Remann (Immersive Media) and lecturer Liese Endler.
