Bauhaus-Universität Weimar secures funding for female professors
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has successfully secured funding from the »Women Professors Programme III« of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz, GWK) announced on Friday, 8 November 2019 that an independent panel of experts had approved the concept entitled »Zukunft Gleichstellung« (»Equal Opportunity in the Future«) submitted for the »Women Professors Programme III« and moreover defined it as excellent (»Gleichstellung: Ausgezeichnet!«).
Of the 71 universities to apply for funding, the equal opportunity concepts of 50 universities were approved. They are eligible for up to three rounds of start-up funding for the initial appointment of women to permanent W2 or W3 professorships and to implement far-reaching measures to promote equal opportunity at their university.
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is also among the ten universities whose concept for personnel development and recruitment on the professorship track was rated as excellent. The »Gleichstellung: Ausgezeichnet!« distinction means the university is eligible for funding for the first appointment of a fourth female scientist.
Over the years, the number of women working as professors at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has increased; currently 27 percent of professor at the university are women, which is above the national average. This is largely attributed to the gender equality measures that have been implemented. A comprehensive package of additional gender equality measures was already put in place within the framework of the »Women Professors Programme I«. The measures initiated, which include the Women’s Promotion Fund, Congress Expense Fund, flexible childcare, and doctoral and re-entry grants, were established at the university in the long term, continue to shape the approach to gender equality to this day, and constitute an indispensable component of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. In 2018, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar was awarded the title of »Total E-Quality« for its exemplary personnel and university policy oriented to equal opportunity.
The university wishes to continue this positive development with the »Women Professorship Programme III«. It has conceived far-reaching measures to further increase the proportion of women in leading academic positions, provide targeted support for young female researchers, and raise awareness of the issue of equality in teaching and research.
