3 September: Advance Premiere of the Bauhaus-Series »Die Neue Zeit«
»Die Neue Zeit« is being released to celebrate 100 Years of Bauhaus. The six-part television series tells the story of the early Bauhaus and the events of the 1920s in Weimar. The series was shot in in Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Main Building as well as in Walter Gropius’ director’s room. Lar Kraume is the director of the six-part mini-series, and August Diehl and Anna Maria Mühe star as Walter Gropius and Dörthe Helm.
Before »Die Neue Zeit« aired on ZDF and ARTE, an advance premiere took place in the Weimarhalle on 3 September 2019. The premiere was attended by director Lars Kraume, lead actor Anna Maria Mühe, producer Thomas Kufus, representatives from ZDF, and State Secretary Malte Krückels.
A screening of the first and second episodes of the Bauhaus television began at 7 pm. All interested Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students were cordially invited and a number of free tickets were available for the screening. When Walter Gropius met journalist Stine Branderup in 1963, he had already lived quite the eventful life. Branderup, having heard the stories many times before, had no interest in that part of his bibliography. She told him in no uncertain terms that he betrayed the modern ideals of the Bauhaus: The women at his school were not supported and he systematically suppressed talented women. Branderup asked him to comment on the case of Dörte Helm, a Bauhaus student.
Germany, 1919: The First World War had just ended and the empire had collapsed. With old traditions being associated with destruction, Europe was seized by a wave of modern ideas. In this new age of turmoil, a young woman named Dörthe Helm began studying at the conservative Großherzoglich Sächsische Hochschule für bildende Kunst in Weimar. When she first heard Walter Gropius’ speech at the newly foundedStaatliche Bauhaus Weimar, she enthusiastically enrolled as a student. Gropius made many enemies with his futuristic ideas of art and architecture, but he opened new horizons for Dörthe. The Bauhaus became a breeding ground for a revival of painting, music, and society--and in this feverish atmosphere, Dörthe and Gropius became close. Layer by layer, Dörthe freed herself from the corset of her time, seeking her way as a woman, artist, and activist.
But while new life was developing at the Bauhaus and the seeds of great hopes germinated, inflation left much of society poor, hungry, and hopeless. Conservative right-wing forces were regaining strength and posing a threat to this new era and the existence of the Bauhaus. Gropius found himself trapped in a dilemma--he would have to compromise his ideals in order to save his school.
When Branderup and Gropius reach the end of their interview, the emotions and struggles of the past remain. The pieces of art surrounding Gropius in his villa on the east coast of the USA are witnesses and protagonists of the series, as are the renowned artists and designers who once gathered under the Bauhaus roof--Johanes Itten, Oskar Schlemmer, Lyonel Feininger, Gertrud Grunow, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee und Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Breuer, Gunta Stölzl, Marianne Brandt, Josef and Anni Albers--and made it into the art school that defined the 20th century like no other.
