Participatory Architecture: Bauhaus-Guest Professor Diébédo Francis Kéré to lead two workshops with students at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
Following the immense success of his inaugural lecture in November, Bauhaus-Guest Professor Diébédo Francis Kéré, together with Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students, will be focussing in depth on the topic of »Participatory Architecture« this January.
On Wednesday, 19 January 2022 from 6 pm to 8 pm, he will plan and lead the first of his two lectures in Weimar together with Julia Heinemann (Dipl.-Ing), research assistant in the department of Building Morphology. The theme »Bauhaus Module als temporäre und öffentliche Bildungsformate« (Bauhaus.Modules as Temporary and Public Educational Concepts) will be discussed in groups work in the Audimax. The discussion will also include the question of how designers who have studied at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar can expand their impact beyond Weimar and how they can reach people through their work in the long term. How can the university as an educational institution encourage its graduates to continue playing an active role in society post-graduation?
This open workshop on Wednesday evening in the Audimax will be carried out in person in small groups and will also be live streamed at www.uni-weimar.de/bauhausgastprofessur. This will provide students from all faculties with the opportunity to exchange ideas with Francis Kéré and to participate in the workshop. In a joint final session, the results of the event will be briefly summarised. All those interested are welcome to follow the live stream.
On the following Thursday, 20 January 2022, Prof. Kéré will continue the exchange with a small number of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students and Ph.D. candidates from 9 am to 12 pm in the Oberlichtsaal. Together with Prof. Sven Schneider, Chair of Computer Science in Architecture, and Philippe Schmidt (Dipl.-Ing.), scientific employee in the department and coordinator of the Master's degree programme, participants will tackle the question of the potential scenarios for life in rural Burkina Faso in the future. The workshop will also incorporate experiences collected during research projects at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, as well as those from the joint-operated Emerging City Lab.

Diébédo Francis Kéré is considered one of the world’s leading contemporary architects and is the current visiting professor at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar for the 2021/2022 winter semester. During his events with students, he offers insight into his work as an architect, work which is characterised by themes such as holistic methods, circular economy and modification of materials. His understanding of ecological and socially sustainable architecture focusses on the local, meaning not just the use of local materials, but also the participation of the local population. His work is inspired by each location’s specifics and social structure.
The workshop is part of the »Mensch Macht Moderne« series, in which the university grapples with questions of human responsibility in modern society.
