Results of the International Office’s Photo Competition
»same same different« – was the motto of this year’s photo competition hosted by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s International Office for the sixth time. Awards for the best photos were presented in the foyer of the University Library on 29 October 2014.
Wanted were photos , which reflected the impressions from studies or internships abroad. Also those from international students, either of their new place of study in Weimar or from their home country were welcome.
This year’s first prize went to Frédéric Engelhardt for his photo »Montjuic« – taken in Barcelona, it is a composition of multiple tourists posing in front of one of Barcelona’s landmarks; one could almost think it was staged. Engelhardt received 200 Euros prize money for his work. Nicolas Buenaventura, a student from Colombia, received second prize for his photo »Routine Day«, which is endowed with 100 Euros prize money. The photo depicts an elderly woman carrying a small caiman under her arm while she walks along the beach. Third prize was awarded to Alexia Manzano for her contribution »Barceloneta«, an interesting perspective of Barcelona’s city beaches. She received 50 Euros prize money for her picture.
This year there was great resonance for the selection of the Audience Award – almost 150 students, university faculty and guests cast their vote. The winner was Muhammad Raisul Islam, a student from Bangladesh, for his photo »Faces«. Hundreds of faces seem to be looking straight at you – at first glance it appears to be a homogenous crowd, yet upon closer inspection very unique faces with individual life histories appear.
The winners were selected by a jury made up of representatives from the four faculties, the President’s Office, University Communications and the International Office. The awards were presented by Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, Vice-President (Prorector) of Academic Affairs, as well as Dr. Christian Kästner, head of the International Office and Andrea Weber, project manager.
There was great interest in this year’s competition – almost 60 photos were posted by the International Office, including work by international students from Bangladesh, Italy, Colombia, Iran and Kazakhstan. Although the motifs differed greatly – all of the submitted photos had something in common: they provide a personal insight into the life in other countries and cultures and allow the viewer to share in this experience for a brief moment. At the same time the photos depict the many possibilities students have to gain international experience during their studies, whether it be through one of the partner universities or a self-organised stay abroad.
The exhibition will be on display in the foyer of the University Library (Steubenstraße 6, 99423 Weimar) until the end of November.
