Dear Alumni,
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar invites you to summaery2021, which will take place from 15 to 18 July. Supervised by the Faculty of Art and Design, the annual exhibition focusses not only on the relationships between the faculties, academic culture and individual projects, but also hopefully marks the beginning of the end of 18 months of studying and working in a pandemic. summaery2021 is an opportunity to participate in current discourses and share your perspectives. It also offers you the chance to experience exceptional work and projects from art, research and teaching that were created during this extraordinary time.
A team of professors, lecturers and students from the Visual Communication Master’s programme came up with the concept, the design and the implementation of the graphic appearance for summaery2021. Burkhart von Scheven, professor of visual communication for image-text conception, explains the central idea of the annual exhibition:
»This year’s exhibition, which takes place under the title ›TheSum‹, will, on the one hand represent all of the faculties at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar while also being relevant for local, regional, national and international audiences from across all different cultures and cohorts, as always. The event represents diversity and inclusion. ›TheSum‹ is intended to make a statement on the perspectives of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students, staff and lecturers that extends beyond Weimar.
On the other hand, however, the world has changed after a year and a half of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Through ›TheSum‹, our hope is to understand this unpredictable situation as an opportunity rather than a problem. Over the past 18 months, we and our audience have learned how to create compelling digital lectures and presentations, allowing you to participate without physically being there. Hybrid and purely digital formats will make it possible for ›TheSum‹ to take place over a longer period this year and to reach a larger audience than ever before.
›TheSum‹ symbolises a big NEVERTHELESS and will provide a conclusion for a situation that we will hopefully never have to revisit, but that has also led to special, exciting and avant-garde solutions and experiences. The exhibition will hopefully mark the beginning of the end of a year and a half of the coronavirus; a positive end to curfews, maintaining a two-metre distance from one another, and an end to uncertainty and frustration. A final stroke under which the results, either despite or because of the unusual circumstances, are added up. A final stroke with its own parameters. ›TheSum‹ wants to prove that 1 plus 1 is at least 3.
Enjoy the over 100 exhibits!«
