In her Ph.D. project titled »Landschaftsästhetik – Eine Untersuchung landschaftlicher Atmosphären« [Landscape Aesthetics – An Investigation of Landscape Atmospheres], Marie Ulber artistically analyses six different landscapes.
The term »atmospheres« refers to spatial quality in ambience which is capable of influencing the human condition. The series »Horizonte« [Horizons] examines atmospheres at the greatest reduction possible. The photos were taken from 2010 to 2012 from a single location and depict the ambient qualities of the sky and sea.
Each picture in the 24-part series is comprised of two photos taken during the same month. The time between them ranges between one hour and one month, as the artist only shot photos when she sensed a special atmosphere. The collection of horizons not only reveals how richly diverse they can be, but also evokes questions as well. The juxtaposed landscapes allow the viewer to make direct comparisons in each work and the accentuated horizontal format focuses the spatial ambience.
The series presents the most expansive field of perception, the ocean horizon and emphasises its state of constant change as it expands and retreats, is clear or hazy and with subtle variations in atmosphere.
