Jena is a city with a rich history in sciences and in particular in optics and photonics. For over 150 years the city has been an equivalent for technology, innovation, research and of course light. In regard to the event Jena Lichtstadt 2015, we honor this past by proposing an installation based on light and motion.
With Marktplatz being our starting point, we were inspired by the experience of walking through the narrow alleys and passages around the square. After observing passers-by using this spaces, the idea of tracking their movement and behaviour was born. Our aim is to translate this invisible information into a physical interface with the medium of light. The objective is to create a generative experience that is based on public participation and social interaction. The kinetic light installation will be placed in different passages, creating a network of light structures, that will illuminate this unique places and at the same time reveal their usage. Our target group is the passers-by who frequently (or not) use these ways. While the goal is to create a fluid public condition which is programmed by their presence and social interaction. The installation can also work as an attractor for new users and create new circulation patterns.
