At the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, we understand that we play a key role in society, especially in Weimar and Thuringia. We fulfil this role by embracing social responsibility, actively representing democratic values in public, understanding democracy as a fundamental element of our identity, and drawing on scientific, artistic and administrative knowledge and expertise. To highlight this role, Dr. Ulrike Kuch, Vice President for Social Transformation, has declared »Demokratie stärken« (strengthening democracy) as the key theme for 2024.
With this goal in mind, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is aiming to improve trust in democracy, science, art and educational institutions in Thuringia. In light of the current super election year, with local, European and state elections being held in Thuringia, this is especially important.
»The historic Bauhaus is not only associated with the idea of rethinking the world through community, experimentation and the interplay between art, the trades and technology; It is also characterised by its expulsion by right-wing powers. Fur us, this illustrates the importance of having an open-minded society and a strong sense of democracy in educational institutions«, explains Dr. Kuch.
One of the first steps the university has taken towards this goal is to introduce the »Demokratie stärken« Fund. The fund is intended to support projects that are actively committed to democratic values and strengthening social cohesion. Their impact should also extend beyond campus. Projects should involve collaboration with non-university partners and the work should be publicised. Applications can be submitted until 20 February 2024.
Further information on the fund and how to apply can be found here: https://www.uni-weimar.de/de/universitaet/profil/demokratie-staerken/bewerbung-fuer-fonds-demokratie-staerken/
A networking meeting on 11 April 2024 will provide another opportunity to discuss the topic. From 3 to 5 pm, Vice President Dr. Ulrike Kuch is inviting all interested university members to kick off the summer semester.
