The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar set itself a clear focal point for 2024: »Demokratie stärken« (strengthening democracy). Throughout the year, the initiative has provided support for numerous projects that focus on fostering democracy, participating in democratic processes, and that place these topics at the centre of teaching content and research projects. During this year’s elections in Thuringia, this theme emphasised how important an open-minded society and a strong democracy are for today's educational institutions the essential role these factors play in their identity. Dr. Ulrike Kuch, Vice President for Social Transformation, began and led this year's initiative.
On 4 December, the theme of this year will wind down in the University Library’s GRAMA Lounge. We warmly invite all interested parties to attend this event. At 6:45 pm, the »Demokratieverstärker*innen« will be recognised and honoured for their work and commitment to academic and artistic teaching and research projects. This will be followed by the opening of an interactive exhibition. The exhibition includes a digital network of the projects and an explanation of how they work. Guests can explore the network themselves and look at the projects in varying degrees of detail. This highlights the connections between the content, methods, locations, and demands and illustrates the growth of the democracy-promoting network.
»There is a declining acceptance of democracy at the moment and the associated escalating discourse is concerning to many members of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. We consider it a promising sign, therefore, that there were over 20 projects involving more than 50 participating colleagues from academia, the arts, and the university administration and services, as well as collaborations with numerous external partners who have all worked together to strengthen democracy in Thuringia. I wish to sincerely thank everyone for their outstanding commitment and I invite the university community to join us at our 2024 wind-down event«, says Dr. Ulrike Kuch, Vice President for Social Transformation and Presidential Board member.
The »Demokratie stärken« wind-down event will take place at the same time as the renaming of the Audimax to the Maurice Halbwachs Auditorium. Democracy as a counter-strategy to dictatorship is especially relevant today, and reinforcing this concept will continue to play a central role at institutions with a social mission – such as the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will continue to support projects that focus on strengthening democracy.
