Several doctoral students fund their PHD through one of the scholarships offered by the 13 organizations for the promotion of young talent. The Bauhaus Research School provides an overview of further funding programmes for your doctorate within the regular information event "Mortar Board".

There are a lot of possibilities to choose from and to match your personal interests and your research priorities. There are ideologically neutral organizations as well as others that are more politically associated, denomination-based or are run by the unions or employers’ associations. 

You find further details on the application and funding modalities on the websites of these foundations or with the helb of the regional liasion lecturer of the relevant education programme. Furthermore, you could use scholarship databases.

Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation)

Germany’s largest and oldest organisation sponsoring the academically gifted which is non-political and non-denominational.

Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk (ELES – Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Scholarship Programme)

The Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk (ELES – Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Scholarship Programme) is the twelfth scholarship programme for students and doctoral candidates supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). ELES provides scholarships for gifted Jewish students and doctoral candidates who are German citizens, citizens of the European Union, or foreign students with a university-entrance certificate acquired in Germany.

The Avicenna-Studienwerk is the youngest of the 13 organizations for the promotion of young talent under the umbrella of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The Avicenna-Studienwerk supports talented Muslim students and doctoral candidates of all faculties with social involvement.

Hans-Böckler-Stiftung (Hans Böckler Foundation)

Study grants from the Hans Böckler Foundation support socially-engaged young people who are striving towards a further education or postgraduate qualification, both with financial scholarships and with their network of professors, advisory support, provision of internships or help with organising semesters abroad. The Foundation allocates scholarships according to social criteria.

Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft (Foundation of German Business)

Within the framework of the Klaus Murmann Fellowship Programme, SDW offers scholarships to approximately 1600 students and doctoral candidates from all subject areas. They receive financial support in the form of scholarships and additional funds for study years or internships in foreign countries. The goal of SDW is to prepare especially talented and committed young people for future leadership positions in industry and business or other areas of society.

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung awards scholarships to students and graduates of exceptional academic achievement and outstanding political or social commitment. German scholars are expected to endorse Christian Democratic social and political values. The scholarships are open to young German students, graduate students as well as to young graduate students from abroad who study in Germany.

Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung (Heinrich Böll Foundation)

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year. They expect their scholarship recipients to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged, and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice.
