Scholarships for Doctoral and Artistic/Design Projects

Who is eligible to apply and in which format? 

  • doctoral candidates of all disciplines and faculties of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar,
    who are already accepted and registered by the Doctoral Candidate Admissions Board (Graduierungskommission)
    • Thüringer Graduiertenförderung
    • Bauhaus Doctoral Scholarships
    • Re-Entry Scholarships for doctoral candidates (male or female)
  • graduates of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar with an artistic-design project supervised at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar 
    (as a rule, no more than two years are allowed to elapse between the time of application and the completion of the degree.; NO Ph.D. projects)
    • Thüringer Graduiertenförderung ONLY

You can apply for several scholarship formats in parallel - simultaneous applications are allowed.

  • 1 Re-Entry Scholarship for doctoral candidates
    returning from family or sick leave (min. 6 months)
  • Apply until 31 August 2025

Calls for applications for 1) the Thüringer Graduiertenförderung and 2) the Bauhaus Doctoral Scholarship are not open before the winter semester 2025/26, the deadline is expected to end on 15th of January 2026.

1. Thüringer Graduiertenförderung

Scholarships for doctoral projects and artistic-design projects can be awarded to outstanding doctoral candidates and graduates of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in accordance with the GFV TH 2011. 

On condition of available funds, up to 5 scholarships are expected to be awarded in 2025/26 for doctoral or artistic-design projects. (Call in German)

Funding: 

  • up to 3x 12 months for doctoral projects of all faculties
  • or: 12 months for artistic-design projects

Part-time scholarships are possible according to § 2 (5) GFV TH.

The review of further eligibility for funding is carried out annually by the Scholarship Commission, in particular for doctoral candidates, on the basis of the interim report and a statement by the professorship supervising the doctorate.

Extensions are still possible in exceptional cases in accordance with the GFV TH.

Basic scholarship: 1,400 euros monthly + family allowance
(if applicable, according to ThürGFVO: 300 Euro for the 1. child, 150 Euro each further child)

2. Bauhaus Doctoral Scholarships

The Bauhaus Universität Weimar sees itself as originating from the Bauhaus history of ideas, which was a driving force and experimental place with worldwide networking. With the Bauhaus Doctoral Scholarships, the Bauhaus Universität Weimar promotes outstanding doctoral candidates in line with historical heritage and the identity of the University, who exceed subject or national boundaries with their doctoral projects.

In 2025/2026 up to 3 Bauhaus Doctoral Scholarships are awarded, especially for doctoral projects with a specific interdisciplinary or international character.

Funding:  1.400 euros per month 
(if applicable, child allowance oriented at the ThürGFVO:
300 Euro for the 1. child, 150 Euro each further child)

Duration: usually 12months
(Extensions beyond this are possible in exceptional cases)

3. Re-Entry Scholarships for doctoral candidates (male or female)

Funding is available for women and men who had to interrupt their doctoral research for family or health reasons and are now aiming to resume their doctorate after taking parental leave, a family break or a serious illness.

You are eligible to apply if the interruption has been at least 6 months. (Call as pdf)

Up to 2 re-entry scholarships can be awarded on condition of available funds to either a man or woman. The investment is subject to the provision of funds in the 2025/26 funding year.

Funding: max. 12 months, 1,400 euros per month
Family allowance: 300 Euro for the 1. child, 150 Euro each further child

Funding requirements

  • Above-average academic achievement and examination results, corresponding ability for acadamic work (doctoral research) or above-average artistic-design qualification (project)
  • Guaranteed supervision by a professor of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
  • Scholarships may not be awarded to full-time employees. Part-time work is permissible according to the regulations of the GFV TH 2011 and the Stipendiensatzung of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, adapted with the MdU 30/2022.

Please note: For the calculation of the amount of the Thür. Graduiertenförderung scholarships the income of the marriage partner will be considered.

Please note for Equal Opportunity Re-Entry Scholarships:

  • Re-Entry after a break of min. 6 months because of  Pregnancy/parental leave, care time for own children or care for close relatives or a longer period of serious illness. As a rule, the break should not date back more than a 1 year. 
  • a special aptitude for academic work (doctoral work) and at least good performance in studies and examinations

The funding period generally begins in April.

REPORTING DUTIES

  • Funding recipients are obliged to submit a final report.
  • For artistic or design projects:
    should the type and format of the work permit, an obligatory copy of the project is to be submitted to the university library.

  5. University degree certificate (Diplom or master’s degree as a digital scan)
  6. for doctoral projects: acceptance letter by the Doctoral Candidate Admissions Commission or certificate of enrolment in a PhD programme of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

  7. where applicable, an explanation of special personal circumstances and biographical hurdles such as caring for a child or relative, a disability or chronic illness, your parents' (educational) background, migration background, experience of discrimination, etc.

    Proof of break

> does not have to be a member of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
> needs to refer to the candidate and to the project
> for artistic projects: can be an artistic staff member or a recognised artist who is involved in the project supervision (please use the “Letter of Recommendation” form)

Please submit the letters of recommendation separately online as a pdf file without password-protection via the respective professor until the application deadline on 15th of January and send it directly to the scholarship coordinator.

Selection process

The interdisciplinary awarding committee for scholarships of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will select the scholarship recipients in February/March. The selection is subject to the availability of funds.

Equal Opportunity Re-Entry Scholarships 

  • The awarding committee will decide on the awarding in the beginning of March on the basis of the written applications according to the prospects of success considering the specific situation of doctoral candidates with family tasks and for a better compatibility of family and research.

Thüringer Graduiertenförderung/ Bauhaus Doctoral Scholarships:
Applications are reviewed in a two-phased selection process and according to the criteria of the applicable Thüringer Graduiertenförderungsverordnung (§ 2 and § 3, GFV TH 2011):

  1. The awarding committee will make its pre-selection in the beginning of March.
  2. Afterwards, in March the pre-selected candidates will hold presentations, upon which the commission will base its final decisions.
