By combining science, art and design, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is forging ahead in new directions and actively supporting artistic/design R&D projects. Artistic research and design research are very new scientific fields in the German-speaking region. As part of the PhD programme “Art and Design / Free Art / Media Art” offered at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, doctoral candidates can apply themselves to this research field and earn a “PhD by Project” degree in the field of Art and Design. This programme is the only one of its kind in Germany. The final examination is comprised of a practical artistic or design work, accompanied by a theoretical treatment of equal value.
