The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is forecasting a stable supply of natural gas this upcoming winter and is again calling upon all University members to manage their heating needs responsibly.
The energy crisis triggered by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine impacted the heating energy supply last winter. Universities were asked to considerably reduce their energy use and to develop contingency plans in the event of a gas shortage.
The situation is less tense than last year. Although some residual risks remain, the natural gas supply is expected to be stable this winter and gas storage levels are expected to remain high. At the moment, there is no legal requirement to keep rooms at 19 degrees Celsius this winter. However, from environmental and financial standpoints, reducing energy use continues to be important this year. Last year, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar impressively proved that this is possible.
»Last year, we reduced our natural gas consumption by 19.2 percent, or more than 220,000 cubic metres, in comparison with our 2019 usage. This is roughly equivalent to the annual natural gas consumption of 15 four-person households. The main reason we were able to achieve this was the responsible behaviour of University members. This means that in the future, we have the greatest influence on the amount of energy we consume and save«, explains Steven Mac Nelly, Environmental Officer at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
All members of the university can take part and use energy responsibly and sparingly. On the page Saving Energy Together, we show you which measures you can take to save energy through your attentive actions.
