The »Cisco AnyConnect-Client« is not available for all architectures, such as the »Rasberry Pi«. Therefore, we also present the possibility to dial into the university VPN with the AnyConnect-compatible »OpenConnect« client. However, the instructions are without guarantee.
Installation
Before setting up: Check dependencies of the »OpenConnect« client
First make sure that the necessary package »network-manager-openconnect-gnome« is installed.
- Under RedHat-based distributions (Fedora, CentOS, RHEL) it can be installed with the following command:
sudo yum install network-manager-openconnect-gnome - Under Debian-based distributions (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian) please use the following command:
sudo apt install network-manager-openconnect-gnome - Under SuSE (OpenSuSE, SLES, SLED) please use the following command:
sudo zypper install network-manager-openconnect-gnome
After the installation has been completed, it should be sufficient to log off and log on again to be able to carry out the following steps. If you do not find the entry »VPN connection compatible with Cisco AnyConnect (openconnect)« in the list of VPN connections, a restart is necessary.
Open your network settings by clicking on the network icon in your menu bar, select your connection there...
…and click on »LAN settings« there.
You should now see a window with network connections in front of you. Click on the »+« in the lower left corner to add a new connection. (The black bars are unrecognisable IP addresses).
In the window that appears, select »VPN« …
… and then select »VPN connection compatible with Cisco AnyConnect (openconnect)«.
Give the connection a meaningful name (in the example »Uni Weimar VPN«) and enter vpngate.uni-weimar.de as the gateway. Then click on »Add« at the bottom right.
You should now see your new VPN connection in the network overview, under the name you specified. Close the window by clicking on the »X« in them corner.
(Again, the addresses have been made unrecognisable).
Establish VPN connection
If you now click on the network symbol in your menu bar, you should see a new entry »VPN switched off«. Click on this …
… and then select »Connect«.
In the dialogue box that appears, enter your user name as »Username« and your user password as »PASSCODE«. Then click on »Login«.
The network icon should now have changed (in the picture: a padlock connected to the network). If you click on the icon and see your VPN name in the network settings, you have successfully connected your computer to the VPN.
Disconnect VPN connection
Open your VPN settings by clicking on the network icon in your menu bar, select your VPN connection there ...
… and click on »Switch off« there.
