The University Sports Centre (USZ) tailors its sports programme to appeal to a large majority of the students and employees of the university.
For this reason, our programme is based on mass-sport oriented activities. We assume that most students are more interested in having fun and getting fit than preparing for high-performance, ultra-competitive or extreme sports, though we do not necessarily exclude these from our programme. We also strongly encourage our course participants to play sports independently following a preliminary introduction. For instance, there are no referees to monitor the play of traditional sports, e.g., soccer, volleyball, basketball or handball, as we believe cooperation and willingness to compromise can best mediate the differences and needs of the players. We believe this strategy promotes a positive way of dealing with differences in athletic performance. In short, we encourage sportsmanlike interaction, characterized by fairness, cooperation and communication.
Of course, we provide a number of courses with expert instruction and coaching. For example, in training groups, our coaches teach students a variety of sports techniques and give them helpful suggestions about how to continue playing sports on ones own.
The University Sports Club and the German University Sports Federation (adh), of which the Bauhaus-Universität is a member, also offer performance-oriented athletes the opportunity to take part in competitions and high-level sporting events.
Generally, every employee at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and its facilities is eligible to participate in the wide range of sports offered by the University Sports Centre. However, participants may have to fulfil certain requirements before their courses are recognized as a company sports activity (see insurance coverage).
