Organisation

Objective

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is competent when it comes to organisation and administration, but the University is also in a flexible position that allows it to effectively support research and teaching in daily operations, but also to react swiftly to the unforeseeable challenges of our time in a targeted and effective manner.

Aim

Our institutional structure makes us a globally appealing place to study and research. We are a sought-after employer with a national impact.

To achieve by 2026

1. Institutional Identity

The relationship between all work carried out at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar should be an internal and external part of its identity and its role in society, which corresponds to its image. The collaborative development of this identity, which is established by the University and its environment, already contributes to the University’s reputation when it comes to content and communication. What or who are we actually? What values define us? Where do we want to go?

2023 Milestones:

  • Develop a mission statement process
  • Establish a user-friendly digital participation platform

2. (Knowledge) Communication

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has already achieved excellence in so many areas of its work, but unfortunately this is not always recognised or properly communicated. Therefore, it is particularly important to start creating more visibility, transparency and appreciation for the art and research goals, results and processes at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, both internally and externally. We need to not only strengthen our communication strategies, but to potentially also fundamentally rethink them. As an educational and research institution that focusses on current and future issues, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar intends to create institutional conditions and structures that will make all forms of articulation and communication, as well as knowledge formats usable for those involved in research and teaching.

2023 Milestones:

  • Job description for knowledge communication
  • Define and prioritise various communication strategies for various target groups
  • Create a plan for revising the University website (including a digital art and research »showcase« and a University intranet)
  • Readjust the University’s image
  • (Further) develop an analogue art and research »showcase«
  • Develop a writing workshop
  • Revisit the cooperation with the Bauhaus University Press Weimar

3. Internationalisation

Internationalisation improves the quality of teaching and research. It also encourages intercultural understanding, thus increasing the appeal of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar for students, doctoral candidates, scientific and artistic staff, as well as academic support staff. This is why we are developing forward-thinking internationalisation strategies and offering professional services. This includes mid-term goals for expanding multilingualism in the daily operations of the University.

2023 Milestones:

  •  Apply for BAUHAUS4EU funding
  •  Evaluate/strategise cooperations and exchanges
  •  Revise internal and external internationalisation

4. Optimise Processes and Transparency

The committee structure at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is incredibly complex and arguably excessive for an institution of its size. The goal of our administration is, together in consultation with users and staff, to strengthen the internal efficiency of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar by simplifying structures and streamlining processes. In addition, we wish to implement new formats to promote leadership responsibility and establish a positive error culture, thus increasing participation and appreciation for committee work.

2023 Milestones:

  •  Develop approaches for reorganising committee structure
  •  Reorganise committee structure for digitalisation
  •  Optimise and digitise administrative processes
  •  Reorganise the structure of the Service Centre for Facility Management

5. Appointment Procedures

Professors are essential assets to the University, and appointment procedures represent a major investment by the University community. In order to ensure that professorship positions are filled efficiently and effectively, the processes of recruiting and integrating researchers and instructors needs to be professionalised in a legally transparent way. Particular attention will be paid to outstanding young talent who will have a long-term association with the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

2023 Milestones:

  • Revise appointment regulations
  • Design an onboarding process for newly appointed professors

6. Non-Professorial Teaching Staff

The early-career scientists and artists at the University contribute significantly to fulfilling research and teaching tasks. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is seeking to visibly and accurately recognise these contributions by improving further education and other professional qualification opportunities, as well as offering personnel development opportunities for supervisors. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is also participating in the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) initiative to establish alternative career paths for new generations of academics.

2023 Milestones:

  • Faculty-specific targets for achieving permanent employment quotas
  • Implement plan of action for approaches outlined in the »Perspektiven für den akademischen Mittelbau« position paper
