The IHZ has been based in the Ernst Neufert House in Weimar-Gelmeroda since spring 2023. The architect and former Bauhaus member Ernst Neufert, who became famous not least for his "Bauentwurfslehre" (building design theory), which is still used today, built his residential and office building in 1929 using the balloon-frame principle in wood, which was widely used in the USA, on a floor area of 10 x 10 m in a one-metre grid. As an experimental house, it reflects his interest in the standardization of the construction industry.
The house, which has been largely preserved in its original state, belongs to the Neufert Foundation and now provides workplaces for ten scientists as the headquarters of the IHZ and the DFG Research Training Group "Identity & Heritage".
