The essay by Dr. Frank Simon-Ritz, which appeared in issue 1/2022 of "Palmbaum: literarisches Journal aus Thüringen", deals with the concept of "cultural heritage" underlying various UNESCO programmes.
"...is Goethe's significance really determined by his legacy - that is, by the original form of the work, which in Goethe's case in particular is edited and annotated down to the smallest scrap of paper? Or is it not rather the fulminant impact that this German poet achieved throughout the world since his first publications in 1769 that assigns him a very special place in the cultural history of the last 250 years?"
Based on a debate at the International Heritage Centre in January 2022, Dr Frank Simon-Ritz from the University Library takes us on a journey through the history of the concept of heritage - from Bauhaus to Bratwurst and from Goethe to cooperatives - in the latest issue of "Palmbaum: literary journal from Thuringia", arguing for a correction of our understanding of heritage.
The full article (in German) on the distinction and interweaving of tangible, intangible and living heritage can now be found in the university library catalogue:
