The Senate is the central academic decision-making body at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. All decisions of fundamental importance to the university are taken by the Senate. Its tasks and composition are regulated in the Thuringian Higher Education Act (Thüringer Hochschulgesetz; ThürHG)and in the Basic Regulations of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The Senate typically meets on the first Wednesday of every month.
The Senate comprises as voting members four representatives of each of the following four status groups: professors, students, academic staff and technical and administrative staff.
This so-called Joint Senate is thus formed by an equal number of members from each status group. Student votes also carry the same weight.
As with the Faculty Board, the Thuringian Higher Education Act stipulates that in matters directly relating to teaching – with the exception of the evaluation of teaching, research, artistic development projects or the appointment of university lecturers – nine additional professors are included in the Senate. It is thus possible for the professor group to reach an absolute majority of votes on the issues in question.
A total of four students from each of the four faculties are directly elected to the Senate. As elected representatives of the student body, student senators should be in regular contact with Student Council and the StuKo (Student Government).
