International Applicants

If you are an international student and would like to study a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD programme or another programme with a special international focus at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, you can find information about application requirements, the necessary documents and submission deadlines on this web page.

Admission requirements at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar:

  • For undergraduate studies concluding with a Bachelor’s degree or diploma: qualification for admission to institutions of higher education;
  • For post-graduate studies concluding with a Master’s degree:
    Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study with a good grade point average;
  • Proof of language skills proficiency as required for a course of study (German and, if necessary, other foreign languages)
  • For certain courses of study, an aptitude assessment examination, aptitude test or restricted admission as mandated by the university

University Entrance Qualification

German universities often have different admission requirements for applicants from foreign countries. Before applying, please read over the information that applies to your situation in the databank at the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) or the databank at the Foreign Education Centre (anabin).

Some applicants from certain countries are required to attend a university preparatory programme at a “Studiumkolleg” before being allowed to study in germany. The Staatliches Studienkolleg Nordhausen provides such university preparation for applicants of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

Language Skills

The University Course and Examination Regulations specify what level of German language (or other language) proficiency is required for each course of study at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

German language proficiency
Full-time students whose native language is not German must demonstrate German language proficiency prior to enrollment. You can meet this requirement with a DHS-2 certificate, Goethe Certificate C2, TestDaf certificate with a minimum of TDN4 (C1 level), telc C1 Hochschule, or equal. There are exceptions for students with a school leaving certificate issued in Germany (e.g. Abitur) or a professionally qualifying degree awarded by an institution of higher education in a German language field.

The German Language Examination for University Admission of Foreign Applicants (DSH) fulfils the German language requirement for enrolment at university in Germany.  » more

English language proficiency
Applicants for English language programmes whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency prior to enrollment. These can be certified by means of a Cambridge Certificate, TOEFL test (paper-based, computer-based, internet-based), IELTS, PTE Academic, or a comparable test. Exceptions are possible if you have a university entrance qualification or a first professionally qualifying degree in an English-language degree program. The required language level and other requirements can be found on the pages of the respective degree program.

Sprachenzentrum (Language Centre)

At the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Sprachenzentrum (Language Centre) you can improve your knowledge of German in intensive courses that culminate in the DSH exam. The exams are held every March and September. German courses are also held during the semester concurrently with regular classes. In addition courses during Bauhaus Summer School are offered.

Aptitude Assessment

For some degree programs, the suitability of applicants is determined by an entrance examination of the documents submitted. Further information can be found on the pages of the respective degree programs.

APS procedure (China, India, Vietnam)

What is the certificate of the Academic Evaluation Center?

The Academic Evaluation Center (Akademische Prüfstelle, APS) is a service institution of the cultural departments of the German embassies in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It examines the documents of applicants who wish to apply for studies in Germany with a Chinese, Vietnamese or Indian school or university degree. After successful examination, applicants receive a certificate. This certificate confirms that the documents submitted are genuine and that the academic achievements suffice to study at a German university.

  • APS India
  • APS Vietnam

Who needs a certificate from the Academic Evaluation Center?

All applicants, who wish to apply for a degree program at a German university with a Chinese, Vietnamese or Indian school or university degree. This applies to both bachelor's and master's degree programs, as well as to preparatory programs like the Studienkolleg. Only when applying for a doctoral program, an APS certificate is not required.

An APS certificate is not required for applications for master's programs if your master's entrance qualification (usually a bachelor’s degree) was acquired outside of China, Vietnam or India. You can only be exempted from the APS requirement if you have completed a bachelor’s degree outside of India/China/Vietnam and you provide your final graduation documents.

Applicants with documents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan do not need a certificate from the Academic Evaluation Center.

If you wish to take advantage of the online application process and have questions about the admission requirements, we can arrange a personal interview for you.

Applications for a higher semester are also possible.

If you do not have access to the Internet, or cannot take advantage of the online application process for any reason, please contact us.
