The back_up festival was brought to life by students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, in the year 1999 when Weimar was UNESCO Culture Capital. The main focus was to create an continuous inventory of current media, and to built a bridge between useing digital techniques and traditional film mediums.
Today the main intention of the festival is, to show short films from students and graduates of art, media, and design from over the world, to investigate and present, and to elaborate on current advantages and to work in competition with traditional film schools. Students as well as professors from the Bauhaus-Universität provide assistance and have the aim of creating a platform of young and engaged media designers, to offer creatives and filmmakers.
The program offers international short film and video competition, a national competition for music videos and an extensive program of workshops, scientific panels, forums, cultural exchange, and clubs.
The festival is organized annually in cooperation with the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Bauhaus Film Institute.
