1. University Library circulation desk reopened

On April 21st 2020 the University Library has reenabled book and DVD checkouts and returns. Initially this service will be available only to university members Mondays through Fridays between 10 am and 2 pm, as well as in the branch library building materials/natural sciences on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 and 12 am. Visitors will have to request materials from the entire library collection in advance in the online catalogue (OPAC) or on the discovery service (BibSearch). Information and administration requests will not be handled on site – please contact us by e-mail or by phone at 49 (0) 36 43/58 28 10. The stacks and reading areas as well as carrels and group workspaces will remain closed.
The University Library observes the necessary hygiene conditions and asks all visitors to follow the general guidelines relating to the corona pandemic. It is mandatory to cover your mouth and nose within the library building. To enable quick pickups and returns, the library entrance and exit will be separated.

On the first day of reopening 37 visitors took advantage of this service, on the second day it was 39 and on the third day already 40.

2. »COVID-19 emergency operations« - sending copies by inter-library loan

Due to the almost complete closures of libraries, GBV Online inter-library loans were suspended across the whole network in mid-March. Starting on April 15th 2020, copies are being sent through "COVID-19 emergency operations". In cooperation with VG Wort, copies may be sent directly to library patrons until May 31st 2020. You may request both partial copies from books (up to 10%) and articles from scientific journals. However, due to the reduced number of participating libraries and libraries‘ limited access to their own collections, please expect delays and a higher than usual number of requests that cannot be fulfilled.
As emergency operations in the current situation don’t allow the purchase of inter-library loan credits and full service remains unavailable, no fees are being raised. Until May 31st 2020, "COVID-19 emergency operations" are free of charge.

3. Expanded database services during corona arrangements

Due to the special circumstances relating to the corona crisis, many database providers continue to offer free or expanded access to their services, such as JSTOR, V&R eLibrary, Project Muse, Elsevier and Ebsco. The database information system (DBIS) will provide you with an overview and links to the services.

4. Free access to EBSCO databases

Due to the corona crisis, information provider EBSCO have expanded their database services for scientific libraries. Between the present moment and the end of July, the University Library is able to offer free access to the »Business Source Ultimate« and »Academic Search Ultimate« databases. Both databases can be accessed remotely via Shibboleth. Click »Institutional Login« on the start page and sign in.
»Business Source Ultimate« is the largest in the economics database series Business Source. It grants access to over 2,000 peer reviewed journals from the subject area of economics, of which 1,479 are available freely in their current issues.

»Academic Search Ultimate« is the largest in the multidisciplinary database series Academic Search. It grants access to over 8,400 peer reviewed journals from the subject area of economics, of which 6,410 are available freely in their current issues.

5. De Gruyter – 75,000 additional items available

De Gruyter also expand their service during the corona crisis: until June 30th 2020 75,000 additional items are available across campus, with content by partner publishers University of Chicago Press, University of California Press und Yale University Press available starting in May.
Please access this service via De Gruyter‘s own website. University members may access these items from outside the university network by establishing a VPN connection.

6. New license: »Beck-online.DIE DATENBANK« university module

Since April the University Library has changed its online service provided by C.H. Beck. By consortium agreement, the university module in »Beck-online.DIE DATENBANK« is now available. The module provides access to numerous materials published by Beck: reference books, encyclopedias, comments and journals. You can find an extensive overview on the start page. It is currently possible to register a personal account with the provider using a VPN connection. In its descriptions the provider clearly points out that large amounts of personal data will be collected and used, among other things, for "user profiling" and "user tracking". You can find further information in the provider's privacy statement.

7. Online self-study course »Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten@Bauhaus« - now available in English

The Moodle online course »Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten@Bauhaus« that accompanies students step by step through the different phases of scientific work now contains English language items. International students can now call on important information and practical advice from the following areas:
        -   Scientific research and academic writing,
        -   Sources: Function, Types and Evaluation,
        -   Research,
        -   Managing your literature
The English language service was developed by cooperation between the International Office, the Center for Institutional Development and the University Library. The self-study course in Moodle is made possible by the Studium.Bauhaus project.
The course it aimed at all Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students, who may register using their faculties‘ respective access keys. Instructors may use the course to teach their students the basics of scientific work methods online. For assistance with implementing electronic teaching, please contact the eLab directly any time.
Our subject librarians will be happy to answer any questions about our services regarding teaching scientific research or reference management by e-mail.

8. »Open Data Impact Award« - call for submissions

While the »FAIRest Dataset« is still going on in Thuringia until the end of April, the Stifterverband for science in Germany has now announced a countrywide contest named »Open Data Impact Award«. Terms of participation are the same: Scientists working at German universities or research institutions may submit a selected data set. The obvious clever approach is to submit a data set published under FAIR principles to both contests. The new contest will run until the end of June and offers a reward of up to €15,000.
