1. For a clean library – an appeal to our visitors

We know, of course, how tempting it is to dive into a book with a snack or a coffee. Then again: who enjoys leafing through a book full of stains while sat on a table covered in crumbs? Since the library is supposed to stay as clean as possible, eating and drinking (except water) is not permitted (according to library regulations). Our books and journals as well as our technical equipment and furniture need to be protected from wear and tear such as coffee or grease stains. We therefore ask that if you’re feeling hunger pangs or feel a bit parched, please take a snack break outside the library.
We’d also like to thank everyone who helps to keep the library clean!

2. »Lob dem Lichtspiel« - V. Weimar Silent Film Retrospective during Kunstfest Weimar

Film still from DER SCHATZ © Deutsches Filminstitut und Filmmuseum Frankfurt am Main

From August 29th until September 10th 2023 the Lichthaus film theatre and Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar will once more show and contextualize films that originally ran in Weimar theatres 100 years ago. The focus is on films from 1923 that were seen as highlights and were subject to the economic background as well as governmental conditions. All screenings will be accompanied by historic newsreels, introductions, presentations and talks with experts on film, culture and music, and will additionally feature live music by internationally renowned silent film musicians. After each show, the audience will have the opportunity to join the Lichthaus »Cine-Corner« to chat and debate with event organizers and experts. You are invited to join! You will find this year’s schedule on our website.
The Weimar Silent Film Retrospective is a cooperative effort of LICHTHAUS KINO, BAUHAUS-UNIVERSITÄT WEIMAR, STADTARCHIV WEIMAR and KUNSTFEST WEIMAR.

3. Exhibition »Gefesselte Blicke« and author reading with Volker Kutscher

1920s cinema will remain a presence in the library: until October 21st you can still take the opportunity to see the exhibition »Gefesselte Blicke« with a selection of historic large format film posters from the period.
And if you’re interested in historic crime novels, do not miss the author reading with Volker Kutscher in September that accompanies the exhibition. Kutscher will be reading from his novel »Der stumme Tod« (2009) which is set in the Berlin cinema scene in spring 1930. A talk with library director Dr. Frank Simon-Ritz after the reading will revolve around the novel’s historic background and the transition from silent to sound film.
The event will be held on September 29th at 7pm in the main lecture hall (Audimax). Tickets are already available in the Weimar tourist information (Markt 10) as well as online (regular price €8, senior citizens €5 Euro, students, schoolkids and Weimar-Pass holders €1). Reduced price tickets for students cannot be bought online, only in the tourist information or directly at the box office on the night of the event.

4. Library closed some days in August and September 2023

On August 29th and 30th, the library will be closed due to maintenance work on the building’s electric systems. The month after there will be two more closing days: September 18th (annual check for the building’s safety systems) and September 20th (state holiday). Please note that the building will be closed altogether, which means that the return drop, the copiers and the charge and transfer terminals in the entrance area will be unavailable. The library’s electronic services will be unaffected – feel free to use our online collection and information services!
