1. Semester start in the university library
The library welcomes all newcomers at the start of the winter semester and would like to provide a library introduction. All first year students are invited to attend the online presentation »More than just books - a university library introduction« on October 2nd. From October 8th through 11th there will be guided library tours in the afternoons as part of the orientation week on-site programme. We’re looking forward to meeting the new students and hope to see many of you in the library.
We ask for everyone’s patience if there’s more noise than usual during the semester start. We especially expect some level of disturbance on October 16th from 5pm, when the welcome ceremony is held in the Audimax main lecture hall. If you’re looking for a quiet place that day, we recommend moving to the Limona building.
In addition, a deep cleaning is scheduled from September 30th to October 4th. This, too, may lead to some disturbance and temporarily limit access to some library areas.
2. New literature collection on the topic of »racism-critical university«
For the winter semester the glass shelf near the library service desk will be freshly stocked and will present literature on racism.
This literature collection was compiled by the university’s Diversity Department as part of the 2024 »racism-critical university« focus. The selected books and films are meant to serve as an impulse and as aid to confront the issue of racism, to be aware of it in your own research or art, and to include it in lectures.
All collection items may be used in the library or borrowed. The exhibit is complemented by a digital collection of e-books available for online reading or download.
The collection has already been significantly expanded by new acquisitions, and we look forward to your own suggestions on racism.
Further literature collections compiled by the library can be found on our website.
3. Work together on an interactive whiteboard in the university library
Carrel 2.07 in the university library is now equipped with an interactive whiteboard.
The new tool features a user-friendly UI that allows you to work on projects together, do brainstorming sessions and work on presentations interactively. All Bauhaus-Universität students are invited to reserve the carrel in our online reservation system to work with the whiteboard. We’re also keen to hear about your experiences and receive feedback.
4. »heise+« - new IT e-journal subscriptions
»heise+«, publisher Heise‘s digital subscription on IT and technology, offers full text access to articles from c't Fotografie, c't Magazin für Computertechnik, iX, Mac & i and Make from 2016 onwards. The university library no longer subscribed to these journals in print from September 30th 2024 and provides access to the »heise+« online service, initially for one year. No separate login is required to access the service from within the university network. University members may additionally access the service from outside the university network using a VPN connection.
The periodicals are listed individually and linked in the electronic journals library EZB.
5. »A year with the star« - Exhibition by photographer Elena Kaufmann and book presentation
Photographer Elena Kaufmann has followed members of the Jewish community in Erfurt with her camera for a year and taken both atmospheric snapshots and several portrait shots. The Erfurt based journalist Antje-Maria Lochthofen was able to put Elena Kaufmann’s photographic impressions into words. The talked to the portraits‘ subjects for hours and converted her notes into texts that now accompany the pictures. The portraits and snapshots were initially shown in a book and an exhibition during the Achava Festspiele in 2018 in the Erfurt Kunsthalle. They are now on public display again in the university library until November 1st.
In the context of this exhibition, Prof. Dr. Henning Schmidgen in cooperation with the Achava Festspielen will present the book Témoignages strasbourgeois: Berichte französischer Überlebender der Konzentrationslager Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora (ed. Anett Dremel, Michael Löffelsender and Jens-Christian Wagner) on October 24th at 6pm.
