Universal Polyphonic Player
Instructor: Thomas Grill
The Universal Polyphonic Player (short UPP) is an infrastructure for all kinds of polyphonic events – be it note-like events, other generated sounds or short grains in granular synthesis. The strengths of the system are a modular, easily extendible design, almost unlimited polyphony, ease of control, DSP load scaling and sample-accurate timing.
This workshop presents a general framework for playing polyphonic events, be it sample-based (granular) playback or generative audio synthesis. The method is purely patcher based, no specific knowledge is required.
The focus of the workshop will be on the implementation of the technique and on various practical use-cases, e.g. MIDI-note-style synthesis, types of granular synthesis and others.
Once understood, this framework can serve as a swiss-army knife for everyday digital musicking tasks.
