Description
This is an invitation to explore the subversive potential of performance art. Our starting point will be Pipilotti Rist’s provocative statement "Ich kotze. Jetzt ist was andres auf dem Tisch" (Eng.: I puke. Now there’s something else on the table). Based on this motto, we will collectively explore strategies to refuse to digest, toss up the status quo, shake the habitual, and put something new on the table.
From its early emergence, performance art has served tactics to confront societal norms, challenge established power structures, and point the finger at deep-seated issues. Drawing inspiration from the rebellious spirit of performance art pioneers, we want to explore the radicality of placing our own bodies in space and time and investigate their sociopolitical implications. Performance will be our medium to point the finger, stick it down the metaphorical throat and create a disruptive and deconstructive reflux. The disgorged we will reassemble into new potentials.
Throughout the semester, we will inspect the core elements of performance and explore methodologies in performance art that emphasize the significance of embodiment. It will be important to have a look at the dynamics between performers and their audience, as well as the concept of shared space.
Everyone is welcome to share their own performative practices and exercises to catalyse, subvert and interrupt the flow. Together we will look for unconventional artistic strategies that mainly use the body as their medium.
We will engage in practical exercises, discussions and collaborative actions, creating the most open and inclusive environment possible for the exploration of performance art as a powerful tool for artistic and social subversion.
Admission requirements
A general interest in performative practices in the art field as well as an interest to radically put things into question. Openness to work with your own body and to find collaborative ways to narration. Openness to share own experience and listen to others'.
Anyone interested in a practical approach to performance is welcome to join, regardless of their background or expertise. The sharing of diverse knowledge and perspectives is strongly encouraged.
