TourReatu
a soundtour through the musé Reatu, its history, its sound and hidden stories
20-30Minutes
by Anatol Kempker and Frederik Esser
This composition is a crossover piece: Germany meets France, Soundart meets Museum, Hip-Hop meets History. Also the two authors come from different directions – one comes from the Hip-Hop and works with beats and samples from all kinds of media – the other is more a live performer in rhythm and a structuralist. In the composition it leads to a vivid mixture of styles and a dense atmosphere of sound, rhythm and informations about the museum Reatu in Arles.
The piece comes around in four parts, each has the same underlying structure and treats one central theme of the museum:
1.“the monkeybread tree in the courtyard” – he welcomes all visitors of the museum, it has a story to tell and gives the monkeybread, which makes nice shaky sounds. You hear it through the whole piece. 2.“Turning around the courtyard” - not only the building, also its history and energy is very special, 3.“good demons” – the wind, the sun and the water – all this surrounds this place, that some visitors already described as mystic 4.“soundart department” - the youngest investigation of the museum brings vivid artworks into these historical walls
The soundmaterial which is used in this piece has three different levels and origins:
_first; there are recordings of a tour through the museum, guided by Mme Mutashard, the director, who shows the museum to a group of German students. Comments of the group and the wind comes already with this level. The script gets completed by dry recordings of the same text in the studio.
_second; there are the recordings of a performative and experimental extra tour through the museum. The two authors of this piece used founded objects, walls, chairs and steps in the empty museum to discover this special place and its acoustics with their bodies. They created beats and sounds that mix up with the sounds of the wind.
_third; there are post-produced rhythmic patterns out of the recorded sounds and beats created in the museum, which carry the whole composition.
ROOM and Placement:
This piece can be understood as a soundart piece, which give the listener a deeper insight into the different aspects of the museum. The soundmaterial has its own character and reflects the cultural synergy that happened when the authors met the museum Reatu. With this focus it is made to be played in the museum – whether in a seperate room or (and) on headphones in a cosy room with possibilities to sit and lean back.
