Alternative Rhythms
Can we tune into alternative rhythms in order to escape the confines of our restrictive, linear, hegemonic time?
What does it mean to be ‘in’ or ‘out’ of time? What lies outside of our rhythmic perception? What inhabits the in-between? How can we reach the out of sync space? How can rhythm be used as a method of becoming other… becoming symbiotic(?)… becoming post-human?
Rhythm and time are two intertwined concepts, rhythm operates within a time. Time as we know it was mainly imposed in order to divide up our existence and mould us into the perfect workers. Our natural rhythms have been shaped, twisted and squeezed until we can no longer see outside of ourselves or beyond the machines of capitalism and control.
As a bassist I understand the experience of ‘locking in’ to a rhythm, surrendering yourself and your thoughts and simply allowing things to flow freely. Could this be extended beyond the musical? A way to get past our human qualities for something other?
By investigating the rhythmic qualities of the non-human, both life and non life, I hope to find and offer alternative rhythms in which to view/experience our surroundings.
