Motion and Orientation, Virtuality and Engagement
Although many novel computer technologies are supposed to be mobile, our bodies' movement is rarely involved in the interaction. Paradoxically we find ourselves continuously staring at screens - only mentally active.
Current trends like Tangible Interfaces and Augmented Reality hold the promise to reconcile the body and the mind. Key factors towards this end are the understanding of human perception and cognition. Also, hardware development must play a more important role in the design of human computer interfaces.
How has computing changed human labor in the realm of craft and creativity? Is there a relevant effect of physical engagement on mental capabilities and the continuity of a workflow? We will investigate on these questions and design alternative workplaces that bridge gaps between physical and virtual reality. Usability benefits that can be achieved with that approach will be evaluated in a controlled user study. The project involves: * interface design (Tangible Interaction, Virtual Reality), * 3D modeling (CATIA), * circuit design and microcontroller programming (C), * application prototyping (AvangoNG/Python) and * user studies and statistical evaluation (SPSS).
