Discover Bauhaus: Bauhaus was founded in Weimar
The founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919 was a result and an expression of the socio-political upheaval present in Germany after the fall of the »Kaiserreich« and the capitulation after World War I.
Walter Gropius was appointed as founding director for the "Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar", which should explore the potential of the continually advancing industrialisation in the optimisation of the production of everyday goods and architecture through innovative artistic work.
The didactic concept included a foundational artistic education with Paul Klee, Lionel Feininger, László Moholy-Nagy, Wassily Kandinsky and Oskar Schlemmer. They shaped the character of art in the 20th century. They were also a fairly international group for that period in time and they revolutionised conventional academic precepts.
