Documentary Storytelling: An Introduction to Telling Engaging Non-Fiction Stories Through Video and Still Images

Documentary Storytelling: An Introduction to Telling Engaging Non-Fiction Stories Through Video and Still Images

This hands-on Summer School course will introduce participants to documentary film-making and documentary photography.

Participants will produce a short documentary on a theme of their choice. They will be encouraged to find a topic they would like to visually explore in Weimar, and they will learn about camera, sound and interview techniques. They will then start doing the fieldwork, find a story that can resonate with an audience and develop it over the course of two weeks. The resulting projects will be video documentaries or multimedia pieces or slide shows of photos accompanied by relevant audio (music or interviews).

Everybody interested in the topic. Basic knowledge of video editing and camera use required.

  • Learning to tell visually driven stories.
  • Understanding the importance of non-fiction storytelling.
  • Learning the basics of documentary filmmaking and documentary photography.
  • Finding real subjects, interacting with them and creating a project able to move audiences.
  • Reflecting on the strength of character-driven stories and the importance of finding subjects viewers can relate with.
  • Reflecting on the sense of place in visual storytelling and how crucial it is to tell beautiful everyday stories.
  • Ultimately, participants learn to recognize and deal with strong stories in action.
