Learn German in one of the most exciting cultural cities in Germany and Europe!

In three and a half weeks, you will effectively learn the many facets of the German language together with participants from all over the world. Whether you are a beginner, advanced, or almost a native speaker – we offer the right language level for everyone.

In the mornings our intensive courses will provide you with the opportunity to  learn interesting facts about Germany and the German culture in addition to practising  speaking, comprehension, and grammar. In the afternoons, we work on projects in the Sprachenzentrum and many interesting and historically complex places in Weimar. Come along on this voyage of discovery: in the footsteps of Schiller, Goethe, Wieland, and the Bauhaus, you will learn the German language in active and practical use! The course program includes free visits to exciting cultural sites such as the Goethe House, the City Palace, or the new Bauhaus Museum. After class our amazing accompanying programme awaits you!

Even outside of the course, you can fully immerse yourself in the German language and exchange ideas with your fellow students. Our varied social programme offers many opportunities, which vary from chats during our game nights, visits to the cinema to improve your listening comprehension, and opportunities to expand your vocabulary by discussing exciting ingredients at the international dinner to a karaoke evening during which the bravest amongst you can sing their favourite songs. On the weekends, you can also join excursions to various important nearby cities.

Language classes

In the morning classes, you will deepen your listening and reading comprehension as well as your writing and speaking skills. With professional support and in small groups you can build and expand your vocabulary, your grammar, and your phonetic skills. One focus is on communicating in German: during the course you will have numerous opportunities to put your German language skills to practical use in different stimulating learning environments! In addition, throughout the whole course, you will learn insightful and interesting facts about Germany, its inhabitants and German culture.

Project classes

Thanks to our close cooperation with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the language lessons are complemented by exciting projects on site: You can visit the museums, houses, and institutions free of charge and test and expand your language skills in practical use in an inspiring setting. The Bauhaus Museum, Goethe House and much more await you - come along on this journey of discovery and deepen your cultural knowledge at the same time as you improve your language skills! Depending on your language level and your interests, you will also have the opportunity to explore Weimar's surrounding area, visit the neighbouring cities and experience German culture first-hand on excursions. Your own wishes and suggestions are, of course, always welcome in class!

Accompanying programme

After class you will also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the German language. Benefit from our varied activity programme and take advantage of the opportunity to directly use you new language skills:

  • practice your German in a relaxed atmosphere during game nights
  • get to know the German cuisine at the International Dinner
  • improve listening comprehension and gain new insights into German culture when watching German films at cinema mon ami
  • check out important cities of German history such as Berlin or Dessau

Our intensive German courses are designed for internationals from the age of 18 who seek an authentic experience and real immersion into the German culture and language. Our participants come from all over the world! The average age is usually between 20 and 30 years, but all groups are very welcome, regardless of age.

There are no language requirements. You can start your first German language course without any previous knowledge. Alternatively you can improve your existing German language skills. Before courses start, all participants take a placement test. Places are allocated according to their results.

Courses are offered at  all levels up to Level C1, provided that there are enough participants who have the language skills required for the respective level.

During registration, you will be asked to estimate your language skills according to the Common European Framework of Reference.

The Language Centre of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers German language courses throughout the year. The intensive courses in August always are the cherry on top: Our courses are tought by committed and experienced teachers for German as a Foreign Language. They work hard to make every lesson lively, interactive and highly engaging!

In addition, each course will be accompanied by a so-called 'tutor': He or she is not in charge for professional language input, but provides organisational support. Our tutoring team will welcome you on the arrival days and accompany you to the excursions. Our tutors usually are students themselves and know Weimar and the university inside out. They will be your buddy and contact person during the entire time and will help you with advice and support!

The excursions take place at the weekends. 

 

After successful completion of the language course, you will receive a certificate of participation issued by the Bauhaus Summer School. It will show the course title, the date and duration of the course, the number of contact hours as well as the main contents and topics.

Participants earn 6 credit points (ECTS) after completion of the three-week course (approx. 100 teaching hours). In order to receive credit points, it is necessary to attend at least 80% of the course lessons and to fulfil the required tasks. 

Prior to your participation, it is essential that you clarify whether your home university will recognise the foreign credits you intend to earn.

The course fee is 990 EURO.
