BISON Course

Description

In the project module (Sustainable Futures - Interactive Objects), we will search for the mysterious, playful, humorous and imaginative use of renewable energies to enable artefacts to become self-sufficient. One focus is on generating energy with the help of the sun. The sun is the closest star to the earth and forms the centre of the solar system. Theoretically, it provides enough energy in one hour to cover the world's energy needs for a year. For this reason, the focus is on the discourse, questioning and discovery of this form of energy from a creative and artistic perspective.

In the course of the project module, we will design reactive and interactive objects that feed exclusively on solar energy. This can lead to uncontrollable, complex superimpositions that can astonish, surprise or even disturb us in their appearance, both visually and sonically. The independent life of things, their autonomy and self-sufficiency are at the centre of their presence. This allows projects to emerge that pursue very different approaches and take their own positions. A joint exhibition of the objects is planned for Summaery 2024 and will be developed in the project module. The project module is aimed at Bachelor's and Master's students and offers self-motivated and self-organised projects a place for discussion, production and debate.

Keywords: interactive art, sustainability, AI, renewable energies, movement, sound, solar energy, reactive objects, autonomy, self-life

The following teaching formats are offered:

Lecture: A lecture series is offered to accompany the professorship's Bachelor's and Master's projects. This deals with various creative and artistic positions and provides an insight into tools and methods for the conception and design of interactive and reactive objects, artefacts and their interfaces that deal with the topic of solar energy. In addition, we will be visited by interesting designers and artists who will give an insight into their work and working processes. The language of instruction will be English.

Workshop: Christoph Noe will offer a workshop to accompany the project module and will give us an insight into his working methods and production processes.

Artisttalk: We will receive visits from interesting designers and artists who will give an insight into their work and working processes.

Consultation: Individual projects and your own professional development can be discussed by appointment.

Excursion: In order to explore the design and artistic approaches under real conditions and to gain further impulses for the development of the project, we will go on an excursion from 17-21 June 2024. All students from the project module are invited to take part.

Admission requirements

Prerequisites for participation in the project module are the completion of two accompanying specialised modules in Interface Design. The following modules are offered:

• Physical Computing: Harvesting Sustainable Futures by Brian Larson Clark

• Solar Sound by Clemens Wegener

• Digital Realms: Photogrammetry and Sustainable Narratives by Jesús Velázquez
